Old Nordic Map

Old Nordic Map is offered for free with daily rate limits for personal, research and education usage by the end user (not part of a service where it would be offered to more users).

You must contact Encharted Media AB ([email protected]) and receive a paid access to if you want to use Old Nordic Map large-scale, commercially, or if you are not the end user, for example, if you plan to include this map as a layer inside a service you are offering to other people.

The daily rate limits are subject to change without notice.
It is not allowed to bypass rate limits or download the tiles in bulk.
It is not allowed to redistribute access to Old Nordic Map or the dataset without explicit permission from Encharted Media AB

These terms are an agreement between you and Encharted Media AB (organisation number 559474-0200, “we” or “us”). By selecting Start using, creating a map-access link, or using the service, you accept these terms. If you do not accept them, do not use the service.

1. What these terms cover

“Old Nordic Map” or the “service” means this project page, our hosted map and API endpoints, and the georeferenced, processed and tiled presentation made available by Encharted Media. It does not include Lantmäteriet's underlying General Staff Map source material, which is separately available under CC0 as explained below.

2. Free end-user license

We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable and revocable license to access and use the service, within the limits shown in your account, for your own personal, research or educational use. This free license applies only when you are the end user and are not providing the service or live tile access to other people.

You may use ordinary screenshots and static illustrations from the service in personal, research or educational work. Please credit “Old Nordic Map — Encharted Media AB; source map — Lantmäteriet” where practical.

3. When a commercial agreement is required

Contact [email protected] for a separate written commercial license if you want to:

• use the service for business or another revenue-generating purpose;
• include it in a product, website, app or service used by other people;
• share or redistribute live access, tiles, a secret link or a substantial extracted dataset;
• cache, prefetch or download tiles in bulk or for offline use; or
• use volumes above the free account limits.

Commercial rights exist only in a written agreement with Encharted Media.

4. Fair and secure use

You must not share or publish your secret link; evade or interfere with access controls, rate limits or security; use automated bulk collection; reconstruct, mirror or redistribute the hosted tile dataset; overload or disrupt the service; or use it unlawfully or in a way that infringes another person's rights. Normal on-screen caching performed by a map application is allowed, but it does not permit systematic or permanent downloading.

You are responsible for activity through your account and secret links. Revoke a link in My maps and contact us promptly if you think it has been exposed.

5. Access, limits and availability

Free access is provided as available. Daily limits, technical formats and features may change as the service develops. Where practical, we will give reasonable notice of a material change. We may suspend or revoke access immediately to protect the service, comply with law, address security risks or investigate a suspected breach of these terms.

We do not promise uninterrupted access, permanent availability of any map sheet, or that the historical map is complete, current or suitable for navigation, safety-critical decisions or a particular purpose.

6. Rights and upstream material

Encharted Media retains all rights it may hold in the service software, design, API, processing work, arrangement and hosted presentation. No ownership is transferred to you. These terms do not restrict rights you may have in Lantmäteriet's CC0 source material obtained independently from Lantmäteriet. Names and marks remain the property of their owners.

7. Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the free service is provided “as is” and without warranties. Encharted Media is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, lost profits, lost data, decisions made from historical map content, or loss caused by interruption or withdrawal of free access. Nothing in these terms limits liability or rights that cannot lawfully be limited, including mandatory consumer rights. A commercial agreement may set different warranties and liability terms.

8. Ending use and changes

You may stop using the service at any time and revoke your links. The license ends when your access ends or if you breach these terms. Provisions concerning rights, restrictions and liability continue where their nature requires it.

We may update these terms by publishing a dated version here. Material changes apply prospectively, with notice where required. Continuing to use the service after the new terms take effect means you accept them.

Swedish law governs these terms. Disputes are subject to the courts of Sweden, without limiting any mandatory right a consumer has to use another forum. Questions and commercial enquiries: [email protected].

The Swedish mapping authority Lantmäteriet distributes the General Staff Map under CC0 1.0. CC0 permits anyone to copy, modify, distribute and use that source material, including commercially, without asking permission. Lantmäteriet requests source acknowledgement as good practice.

Encharted Media's service terms above govern access to our hosted service and do not replace or narrow the CC0 status of source material obtained from Lantmäteriet.
